In three blocks, leave the suburbs behind and escape into woodlands and the site of one of the Potomac River’s most intense battles of the Civil War: Balls Bluff Regional Park. An interpretive trail tells the battle’s story. If you were to do this on a bike I would start with the goose creek segment and then the Potomac, to maximize downhill. The park is home to the historic Elizabeth Mills canal lock system and contains a section of the Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail. The two sides met with roughly 1,700 troops apiece, but it ended in a route, with Confederate soldiers capturing more than 500 Union prisoners as they fled into the Potomac. Take a left and follow the trail to downtown Leesburg. Over thousands of years, the Potomac River wound its way through layers of rock.

It’s a pretty good paddle overall. Very narrow/ grown over in some spots, having to wade through grass, poison ivy, etc. Time your visit well and you can catch the glorious sunset over Shenandoah Valley at the Bears Den Rocks Overlook. Great trail, there is some construction by the time you get to the 2nd park that takes away from the views, but all in all a lovely winding trail.

The Washington & Old Dominion (W&OD) Railroad Regional Park is a paved trail between Shirlington and Purcellville, Virginia. 1/2 mile in. It is north of State Route 7 and south of the Potomac River.Before the Revolutionary War, the Lee family established Coton Manor here. Most of the trail is great. It is located at 21085 The Woods Rd., Leesburg, VA 20175. #5 – Two Creeks Trail Area, Leesburg, VA.

I will definitely go back. A section of the Potomac Heritage Trail runs through Lansdowne. This is a great hike that can be shortened for kids. Not challenging, and was not looking for that, but good distance. Pick your region, your experience, and enjoy the journey! Loudoun County operates Elizabeth Mills Riverfront Park and Kephart Bridge Landing, a 122-acre parkland nestled in Lansdowne on the Potomac. 7 down to the bridge crossing on Selden Island.


Near Dulles Airport, just about 10 miles from Lansdowne is the companion center to the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, the Udvar-Hazy Center. Minimal elevation changes. Just a sandy, pebble, shell bottom. Visitors can explore the diverse successional fields, hardwood forests, wetlands, and riverine habitat.

Gets flooded/muddy easily (I have seen some parts completely impassible at times under water)- would wait 2-3 days after a rain to go out depending on what section.

Whether you hike, bike, or paddle the Potomac, there is something for everyone, Trails, routes and exceptional places between the mouth of the Potomac River and the Allegheny Highlands. In 2006, fifteen miles of the trail were dedicated as a linear park in Loudoun County, from Seneca Regional Park on the Fairfax County line to Keep Loudoun Beautiful Park on Goose Creek. The trail offers a number of activity options and is best used from March until October. No large rocks.

#4 – Red Rock Wilderness Overlook Regional Park, Leesburg, VA. Much of the trail was adjacent to a golf course (we almost got beaned by a golf ball). It is disconnected with the rest of the trail network but future efforts seek to connect it from DC along the Potomac to Leesburg. Easy walk and defined and blazed (blue) path. Offering a chance to both explore your heritage and choose your adventure along the way.
