It wasn’t just that Franklin’s version of Respect was simultaneously tougher and catchier than Otis Redding’s original – the “Sock it to me” refrain and “R-E-S-P-E-C-T” hook were Franklin’s additions – or that the song helped catapult her to stardom. Something He Can Feel was supposed to be part of the repertoire of the 60s girl group at the heart of the film, but it’s too well-written and subtle to sound like pastiche.
