A natural spring-fed pond and creek in the central valley of the park attract deer, coyotes, foxes, waterfowl, and occasional pronghorns. Just as we helped our neighbors return to normalcy sooner, perhaps we can we can also give Mother Nature a hand. However, it quickly became apparent, the lasting challenge was that it left victims with a seemingly overwhelming task to reclaim their lives and reconstruct their homes in the forest. Rattlesnake Butte, a prominent landmark in eastern El Paso County from which visitors can see the Front Range and the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in the distance, is located within the park. August 2018 To date, over half of the nearly 500 homes lost have been rebuilt and much of the vacant land has been sold to new neighbors intent on building their own place in the forest. A sampling of our local parks include: Once upon a time, all the homes in Black Forest were built by individual land owners, usually on five acres or more in very rural isolated forest settings. The Pineries Open Space in Black Forest is land recently acquired by El Paso County, that the county will open as a park at some point in the future. In the not too distant future (10-15 years) most of the homes will be rebuilt and the residual “blacksticks” will be gone.
Note – BFTA does not handle park reservations. The property, with the exception of approximately 30 acres, is subject to a conservation easement held by the Palmer Land Trust. An original homestead site settled in 1874, Homestead Ranch Regional Park features diverse topography ranging from rolling, open meadows to tree-covered bluffs running the length of the park.
