Fat Studies is an interdisciplinary, cross-disciplinary field of study that confronts and critiques cultural constraints against notions of “fatness” and “the fat body”; explores fat bodies as they live in, are shaped by, and remake the world; and creates paradigms for the development of fat acceptance or celebration within mass culture. It builds on the tradition of gender studies and queer studies, focusing attention on the social, cultural, historical and political aspects of the ways in which fatness as a phenomenon and fat people are portrayed and treated. Another term that is sometimes used by university researchers is “critical weight studies”. But despite such courses' popularity among students, critics worry that such classes emphasize bleeding-heart politics over intellectual rigor. These reports and other media portrayals of fat people, like The Biggest Loser reality TV series, frequently portrayed them as not only unhealthy, but also ignorant, lazy, gluttonous, ugly and a drain on health budgets. However, it has increasingly moved away from radical feminism, combined with other forms of fat activism, and has become part of the intersectional framework as it has become more centrally located within Social Justice paradigms.
