Enjoy one of the finest hikes on Chuckanut Drive. That made me laugh — I literally can’t count the number of times I’ve been there, but it remains a favorite. We only drove the first part of Chuckanut Drive to Chuckanut Bay as we were looking to get to the hiking trail entrance.


On this day, I was there at the correct time, but the clouds were a little too dense for optimum viewing. The views here on Heliotrope Ridge are nothing short of amazing, and may inspire you to work your way up to other hikes in the area. There amazing views of Samish Bay and the drive is beautifully forested and shady. And less nerve racking!

After a very short and slightly uphill section, I turned left at two signs that read  “Trail” and “Fragrance Lake”.

Took Hwy 20 and 5 home. Though the alien textures of the glacier can be tempting, don’t walk on it. The forest lands of Blanchard Mountain became state trust lands in the 1920s and 1930s, giving the forest a needed respite. The trail used to be called Chin Scraper, that name also implying it’s steepness, especially going up. To access this hike, head south on Chuckanut Drive to Lost Lake Parking lot. Later in fall and winter, it can be quite spectacular. Best … Heliotrope Ridge is more technical and difficult than Skyline Divide, but offers an even more intimate look at the volcano we see regularly from Bellingham.

This was the only tricky part of the hike. I did not have a backpack with me. Baker in the distance with a beautiful ridge line trail in the foreground. This is a lovely drive on a sunny day. It’s very steep. If you take the Geneva Pond Loop, be sure to slow down and observe the wildlife surrounding the wetland. Because of it’s steepness, staircases abound. The large lot is on your left, just past the Fragrance Lake TH parking and entrance to Larrabee State Park. I was psyched! Someone’s idea of Halloween fun on the Fragrance Lake trail….
Overall, it was worth the time, particularly if you’re going to spend some time in Fairhaven anyway. I’m certain it took countless volunteer hours  to carve it out of the steep hillside, and I’m grateful for those who put in the time. Enjoying Fragrance Lake, for the umpteenth time! If you drive east from Bellingham through Glacier, take a right onto Glacier Creek Road, then a quick left onto FR-37, there will be signs pointing towards Skyline Divide. It was partly cloudy and hazy, but still quite spectacular!

It was a great time of year for the view, as sun-glinted off the water through trees only partially clothed in colored leaves.

The views undeniably get better as you head south, and you may find less of a crowd.
