One day Angie visits Eldon during his work and tells Eldon “when you share stories you change things,” and that if Eldon were to share one of his stories, he’d get lighter.
As Frank rides out of the bush into town, Wagamese reveals the importance of land in the novel through the vivid description of the scenery. Angie is more well-versed in Indigenous knowledge than Eldon is, and her telling of stories almost mimics the Starlight’s receiving stories from the Star People.

Eldon sleeps, and when he awakens he asks Frank to pour out the rest of his alcohol. Frank explains that Eldon didn’t raise him, and that Eldon is close to death.

Eldon was unable to keep his promises to Frank due to the severity of his alcoholism. Eldon’s stories are interspersed with Frank’s memories of Eldon during Frank’s childhood.

As she does this, Angie says that Bunky’s the best man she’s known in her whole life, but that he doesn’t understand a lot of things, like the need for alcohol. Bunky says that Angie came to him like hope, that he thought maybe the farm might’ve turned out to be a home with her there.

Jimmy was all Eldon had. The violence against Eldon’s mother, along with her reaction to that abuse, speaks to the legacies of violence against Indigenous people fueled by colonialism and racism in the United States and Canada. Frank carries Eldon on horseback into the wilderness where Eldon wishes to die in the traditional manner of Ojibway warriors—facing East so that he can see the last sunrise of his last … He was a good man, who enjoyed working outside, and Angie’s Cree mother gave up when her father died. Eldon’s betrayal of Bunky is important to the plot in the final chapters of Medicine Walk. Along the way, Eldon begins to tell Frank stories from his past—stories Eldon has never shared with another person before.

Chapter 21 witnesses Bunky, Angie, and Eldon all sitting in the harsh light of the kitchen.

Medicine Walk Chapters 1-2 Summary & Analysis. Eldon’s father becomes envelopes in the mail, becomes the taste of glue, becomes the scratch of a pencil on paper, becomes the act of waiting. Without Becka’s medicine, Eldon might have died before telling Frank all of his stories. Angie arrives again at lunchtime, this time with no flask.
