The Me 262 appeared in only relatively small numbers in the closing year of World War II. Junkers manufactured nearly 6,000 Jumo 004 engines by the end of World War II. Instead, they focused on seeking improvements to combat planes that had already proved their potential in battle, such as the BF109 and Bf110. As most readers are well aware, Paul G. These were a ground breaking development, and when work on the Me262 started in 1938, it had the potential to transform war in the skies.
The original 004 A model flew for the first time in 1942, but it was not suitable for production because it was too heavy and used alloys in short supply in Germany.
