You start with a big beach, wide and flat, with soft, golden sand and reasonably gentle surf. One of the top attractions in Santa Cruz, the Boardwalk is an old-school, mile-long wooden boardwalk, lined with shops, carnival games, and part of an amusement park. They may be closed now, as we shelter in place to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, but that doesn't mean you can't enjoy them virtually. It's a very picturesque three-hour drive south of San Francisco. However, it’s best to stick to the established campsites, which are usually tucked into narrow valleys and protected from the elements and wind. The best summer beaches in Northern California are at Lake Tahoe. For the warmest ocean swim off the west coast of the United States, your best chances are Newport Beach in early August or at Avalon on Santa Catalina Island in mid to late August. It’s a picturesque beach with rocks and larger sea stacks poking up out of the surf. Despite the name, the park is not in the nearby town of Gualala which lies across the river mouth in Mendocino County.
Within only an hour of San Francisco and many other Bay Area cities, there are an amazing array of beach environments you can enjoy. sooooo who can say what the weather will be next year???? For the same reason, there's not that much difference between sea surface temperatures off the San Francisco area and off the Los Angeles area. It is sure to be hot. For a more adventurous experience, campers can head to Parsons Landing Campground, a secluded, on-the-beach campground on the northeast side of Catalina that you can only access by hiking or kayaking. When you're done enjoying the rides, there's plenty of natural scenery to admire.
