It is the most fun I have ever had baking and I get excited every time I start another loaf. We bake all of our bread & we are looking forward to using this often. While the German made products are more expensive, the quality is considerably better. Much better than in the original recipe. I was adviced by several readers NOT to soak it before baking. No junk.

Thank you very much! I take the lid off and bake the last 10 minutes without the lid. It can just as well depend on how I managed to handle the dough. I googled around a to see if anyone had experienced it, but couldn’t find anything, so the risk is probably not that high. It should also be placed in a cold oven and pre-heated to baking temperature. Or we have perfectly functional products with slight cosmetic or packaging flaws that we can’t sell at full retail.
With the Romertopf this is no longer a problem.
Just like with a Dutch oven, it’s not the easiest thing to place a loaf into a hot clay cooker. Right now it’s the only vessel I use to bake bread in. But like most hypes, it finally fell into oblivion and don’t ask me why. I have baked with both a clay pot and dutch oven and both work just fine.
