‘Pájaros de verano’ It's a breathtaking, moody, elegiac piece of work. In “Birds of Passage,” the ancient ritual of obtaining a dowry leads the ambitious Rapayet (José Acosta) to deal marijuana to some Americans traveling through the region. Implicitly aware of its sociopolitical underpinnings, it flows more on emotion than character, making for a song of a film that's admirable even when it doesn't succeed. We can’t compromise that.
Rapayet’s buddy Moises is an alijuna, an outsider, and has no respect for Wayúu orthodoxy. Nicely shot by David Gallego on 35mm Techniscope (3-Perf). In just a few short scenes Ursula’s seemingly primitive community is now a profitable ring of drug runners. It is a glowing and menacing reprise of the Colombian Corleone days set amongst the indigenous Wayuu, for whom only a few moments are in paradise. I was able to see one a couple of years ago, and I had never heard the Iraqi voice before.
“We wanted to build the anti-action sequence. The movie had a really crisp look to it from the camera work to the lighting and the sound design. This battle is still going on in Colombia, because the country lived for a long time in a very naive state, completely outside of what we call development.
It gives the film a more realist feel. For example, the birds are seen as omens, and the Wayuu people interpret the future based on the birds that come and on the dreams that they have.
